Description

This etching was drawn from the road facing the water, below the Palace of the Legion of Honor Museum, one of San Francisco’s most beautiful art museums and one of the most beautiful views in San Francisco.

On this road, which approaches the museum from below, are a series of stone benches with memorial plaques, this one was the Keeve Family Bench. Each day I worked on this plate, I parked my car by the bench and drew it partially from the car and partially while sitting on the bench. I was looking out onto the bay from above, seeing across the water north to Marin County with the East Bay Hills visible through the bridge cables. From that vantage point, the tremendous power of the currents and movement of water through the Golden Gate was apparent — one could see sailboats and every now and then a big freighter.

During the hours and days I drew it, people from all parts of the world, a few at a time, came walking down the wooded path. Many delighted in the scene also, and stopped to take pictures of each other in front of the view at this commemorative bench.
